Malcontent
I am homesick and I am a dorx and I am sick of always being tired and I miss the south and I miss waffle houses and bbq and coke and tea and I am sick of grad school and sick of working and sick of science.
Now you know.

Going Underground - which London Underground tube line are you?
I'm the CIRCLE LINE!
Your life has no direction. You run around and around and around, passing through many of London's tourist attractions, mainline stations and interchanges: as a result you are often overrun by tourists and accordion players. It takes you an hour to do one 14-mile round trip, passing through 27 stations. You are bright, cosmopolitan, and somewhat jaded, and you like accordion music.
Mind the gap!

You are Elwing the White, Princess of Doriath, wife
of Earendil the Mariner and mother of Elrond
and Elros. When the sons of Feanor attacked
Arvernian you threw yourself into the sea with
your Silmaril, but Ulmo of the Waters turned
you into a bird and you flew to the safety of
Earendil's ship. Together you sailed to Aman to
beg the aid of the Valar. When Earendil and the
Silmaril were set into the sky you settled in a
tower in Aman and flew to greet your husband
whenever he drew near.
Which Elf chick are you from Tolkien's Quenta Silmarillion?
brought to you by Quizilla
Bah. I wanted to be Luthien. But then, doesn't everyone? And she does have a sucky life. Of course, being stuck as a bird when my husband's a constellation isn't my idea of a good time either.
In another note, who knew such snarxiness lurked in the HP fandom still? Not me. Apparently SQ is taking heat for their Book 5 Challenge and their Unexpected Task. Some people are st00pid. (but then, some people are funny.) I think I'm glad I'm not going to Nimbus after all - the collective is thriving just a few miles up the road. :)

Josiah Bartlet for President
I've become such a liberal. Who knew this would happen. I used to be as conservative as they come - still think of myself as one, actually; one that just happens to agree most of the time with people that call themselves liberals. Oh well. My entire political beliefs can really be summed up by a line from Tolkien. (which, of course, since I want to use it, I can't find it. this parenthetical is brought to you by Lyrelle's inability to find treasured books, the common cold, and the letter q.)

Wedding Stuff
So I was just going to email these pictures to my mom, but then I thought that some of you might be interested in them too. If you're not (most of you with only one X chromosome), then feel free to skip this entry. :)
Dress: My favorite dress is by Eden Bridals; unfortunately, they stopped making it a few years ago. Bear in mind, I've never tried it on, so I don't know how it would look on me, but I thought at least it would give you an idea of the style I like.![]()
I had to shrink it so much you can't really see it, but at least you can see the overall style. I think I'm going for an a-line or princess cut with an empire waist and some form of sleeves. This should hide my stomach (my worst feature) while giving me some shape and hiding my flabby arms. Of course, I intend to work on these figure flaws, but it's best to be prepared. One thing I do like that is in style now is the drapy bell-shaped sleeves. Three-quarter sleeves are nice too. Fortunately the style now seems to be a soft, romantic, nearly-gothic look, which is convenient, as that's what I like. I have pictures of lots more dresses, but I think I'll spare those of you on a dial-up connection. For now at least.
Veil: This is my favorite, and it incorporates the leafy theme that Matthew and I keep dancing around. Unfortunately, it costs $250. I'll probably end up making my veil; hopefully I can get it to look something like this.
I like ballet length veils, but that's not a common length, so I may have to settle for a fingertip veil. Well, not if I make it, I suppose.
Place: The Chapel of the Prodigal, in Montreat, we know has weddings, but we don't know for how much. It's pretty, but we aren't stuck on it in the we-have-to-have-our-wedding-there-or-die kind of way.
We also know of Gaither Chapel. Our wedding will not be big enough for Anderson Auditorium, thankyouverymuch. We could have it at a bed and breakfast, or something, but one of the big draws to Montreat is the spiritual tie we both have with it, so it seems sort of silly not to marry in a church.
If we marry in LaGrange, we'd like to do it by West Point Lake; ideally either in park land, or potentially one of the many country clubs/private homes/bed and breakfasts that line it. Anyone want to host our wedding? :)
Cake: Finally, the last picture of the night. I found this cake, along with its recipie in Southern Living Weddings. It's beautiful, and looks tasty, but I don't know if we could pull it off. It might even be too fancy.
It's pretty, though. :)

Stay tuned, those of you interested in wedding stuff - more pictures later today. (I hope.)
And to get the link, I just went back, and my eye fell on the opening sentences again. A&Z are really masterful. With a chaptered, work-in-progress like this, each chapter has to have an astounding opening. And they do. Not outstanding in the cliffhanger sense; outstanding in the sheer wordcraft displayed. I hope one day to be able to write even half that well.

What is it with snow? The day before it comes, I always get sick. And now Kevin and Jenn are here, and potentially grossed-out by all my coughing and hacking. Though they shouldn't be worried - it's viral, I think, and so almost certainly not as contagious. :(
But the snow is pretty.

Wedding Sillyness
Not that we've settled on a date yet, or anything, but I thought I'd post a few wedding-y things tonight, since my mom is now reading my blog.
Attendants: We've basically picked these, but we're waiting for a date to be settled on before we ask them.
Photos: We love www.goforthphoto.com, but I have the feeling it's out of our price range. Oh well. We'll probably get up the courage to ask soon. We'd better, or she'll be booked.
Music: We'd love to have David LaMotte (for so many reasons, including the fact we fell in love while listening to his musice), but neither of us can imagine him as background music. So for the reception, we're thinking mp3s - we both hate DJs, and live bands are out of the question - too expensive, and no one will dance anyway (neither of our families are the dancing types). We still have to find something for the ceremony, though.
Officiant: We want Melvin and Ginny to do it jointly. Once again, though, we're waiting for a date before asking them.
Location: We still want Montreat. We could do LaGrange, and that would put us at the site of our first date, but Montreat is our first choice. It's possibly too expensive though, especially if we end up marrying in summer. Anyway, here's a picture of the area - I stole it from a webpage a long time ago, but I don't know from where . . .
There's more to type - I've got pretty dress pictures galore, and plans for shopping, and flower pictures, and much much more - but it will have to wait for another time. It is late, and I'm off to try to pry my car out of a deserted parking lot.

You Would Think
. . . that grad students, those willing to give their lives for science, those that will bend and shape the fortunes of mankind for the next century and longer, would receive only the best tutelage from the most eminent teachers.
You would be wrong.
This could be a full-throttle rant, taking up pages of your time, but I'm too tired to type it. Twelve-hour workdays will do that to you. I knew that it would be hard, the workload would be massive, but I didn't know it would leave me so tired.

Terror Attack Steps Urged
"The officials said they believe the al Qaeda terrorist network is particularly targeting New York and Washington . . . [Paulison] laid out a vision of post-attack paralysis that made some other department officials wince. "People are going to be on their own for the first 24 or 48 hours," he said, reflecting on his experience with hurricanes as the former fire chief for Miami-Dade County."
Yeah, I'm freaked out. But there's nothing I can do about it, so I go on with my life. I'd love to be back in Atlanta, sure, for multiple reasons. But I'm not and I can't be, so life goes on.

ISTJ
So, as some of you may know, I've been going through a mini-crisis lately. Okay, a big crisis with little mini-crises behaving like satellites around the big one. In any case, my biggest problem is that I do not know if I want to get a Ph.D. (in fact, I'm beginning to have a sneaking suspicion that I don't, at all.) This problem is compounded by the fact that (strunk and white, take that!) I don't even really know if I want to stay in science. Ooops. So I went to see a career counseling guy. Wonder of wonders, he was helpful. I took the Meyers-Briggs and the Strong Intrest Survey. (I apparently am an IsTJ who needs to combine education, social service, and the arts, most likely by becoming a librarian, in case you were wondering.) I have tons of research and what-not to do regarding this, however, and so I am going to use this space to do it, as a webpage is the most accessible thingee at the moment.
The First Task: List careers needing to be researched. List beside them contacts in that field.

There are other fields I am interested in, some feasible (non-profit work), others not so much (musician, actor, artisan, general lazabout). I also need to take time to look at the career center's website, their library, and the list of departments here.
They have Tolkein scholars, why can't I be a Rowling scholar? I could *do* that. Of course, I'd have to be an english major . . . I think my diploma might throw itself at my head.

1) What do you call me? (ok. you don't have to answer this one, as I'm not actually cool enough for any nicknames.)
2) What song makes you think of me, and why?
3) If you could give me one present, what would it be?
4) What one thing/event do you asscociate with us?
5) How well do you think you know me?
I'm in a silly mood. Too much sugar, too much stress.
Glad to hear some good friends are coming for a visit soon. :)
Sunny today. But still cold, and apparently supposed to only get colder.
