To Watch, or Not to Watch?
I could watch the state of the union address tonight, and feel like an informed and educated American. But then, is that feeling really worth two hours of yelling myself horse at the tv, punching the couch pillows, and loudly debating politics with anyone that will listen over the next week?
I think not.

In Memory of John
My junior (maybe senior?) year of high school, a classmate of mine scribbled a poem on the back of one of his tests. The teacher - more a friend of ours now, but our teacher then - saw it, and threatened all year to enter it into the arts competition we went to every year. John pleaded for him not to - he had written it as a parody of the poems we were doing in class - but Mr. Harris did, and it won second place. :) Today I was reminded of him, so I thought I'd post it here, as nearly as I could remember it.

Ow. I was running in last night, because it was cold, and slipped and fell. I have a couple of bumps and bruises and scrapes, but I managed, with the help of the concrete and the rock salt spread on top of it, to tear a rather large, rather deep gash in my hand. We were so tired last night we fell asleep without doing anything other than rinsing it, but this morning it was still oozing, and my attempts to dress it were the inspiration for the above silliness. Love
We had a visit from Audrey and Aaron tonight, who are some of the . . . for lack of a better word, "hip-est" people we know. We went out to a fancy, fun place in the District for supper, and talked about going to Adams Morgan later (though we ended up not) and generally had a wonderful time. We don't do stuff like that often. Sure, we go out occasinally, but it's usually to 'safe' restaurants. We don't drink, so we don't bar hop; we don't dance, so we don't go clubbing. We don't go on adventures to New York or down in the district or to Boston on weekends. We live simple, plain sort of lives. Despite the late night and the adrenaline still flowing from good fun and good friends, we'll drag ourselves up for church tommorrow.
Sometimes I wish we could be more urban, more adventurous, more worldly-wise. The people in the place we went tonight we all so sophisticated. Audrey and Aaron talk about trips to the Kennedy Center, to New York. They're always trying new things.
Sometimes I wish we could be more like that. But sometimes, like right now, I'm grateful for who we are. We're a nice, quiet, solid couple. We are secure in each other. We don't worry about impressing each other or other people. We are content within ourselves.
And I am glad of it.
The title of this post was inspired by a friend's post. There are all sorts of moments in life when you realize why you are who you are, why you're with the person you're with. Sometimes it can be a thoughtful gift, a backrub, a help to a friend in need.
Tonight, for me and him, it was a smile for ourselves alone, after our apartment door had shut behind the last vistor and we were alone, but alone together, in the home we have made.

Ron and Hermione
I want to write a fic to this song, which is actually "Complicated" by Carolyn Johnson.
I'm so scared that
The way that I feel
Is written all over my face
When you walk into the room
I wanna find a hiding place
We used to laugh
We used to hug
The way that old friends do
But now a smile and
A touch of your hand
Just make me come unglued
It's such a contradiction
Do I lie or tell the truth?
Is it fact or fiction
The way I feel for you?
CHORUS:
It's so complicated
I'm so frustrated
I wanna hold you close
I wanna push you away
I wanna make you go
I wanna make you stay
Should I say it
Should I tell you
How I feel?
Oh, I want you to know
But then again I don't
It's so complicated.
Just when I think
I'm under control
I think I finally got a grip
Another friend tells me that
My name is always
On your lips
They say I'm more
Than just a friend
They say I must be blind
Well I admit that
I've seen you watch me
From the corner of your eye
Oh it's so confusing
I wish you'd just confess
But think of what I'd be losing
If your answer wasn't yes
Repeat chorus
I hate it 'cause
I've waited so long
For someone like you
Should I say it
Should I tell you
How I feel?
Oh I want you to know
But then again I don't
It's so complicated

HARRY: I know. I read the last few sentences. Why did you want to see me?
~ DUMBLEDORE looks WEARY ~
DUMBLEDORE: Since this is your last year, I have decided to spill the beans on why Voldemort wanted to kill you.
~ Crackly TENSION fills the air. This is the moment we have ALL been waiting for, since the beginning of BOOK ONE ~
DUMBLEDORE: Brace yourself Harry! You are.....
~ There is an OVERLY long DRAMATIC PAUSE ~
DUMBLEDORE (cont'd): ......the Heir of Gryffindor!!
~ We all GAPE in COLLECTIVE SHOCK at this AMAZING REVELATION ~
HARRY: I've been waiting seven years for that?! What the hell does that have to do with anything?!
DUMBLEDORE: Quite a lot actually! You see, only the Heir of Gryffindor can kill the Heir of Slytherin and vice versa!
HARRY: That is the dumbest thing I have ever heard. You mean to say that I'm the only one that can kill Voldemort?
DUMBLEDORE: Yes, exactly! Why else would I have spent so much time trying to keep you safe for the past 17 years? Normally, I would have just let you die.
HARRY: So then why hasn't he been able to kill me before? And don't go giving me that stupid 'love can defeat anything' crap again, I wasn't born yesterday.
DUMBLEDORE: Voldemort needs the Ancient Amulet of Clichendia to be able to kill you. You need it to be able to kill him.
~We all PAUSE briefly to PONDER the sheer STUPIDITY of this concept ~
HARRY: Do you know where it is?
DUMBLEDORE: Yes, but I think I'm going to let you figure it out for yourself so that I can prove, once again, how much of a cretin I am for not using my expansive knowledge to save innocent lives.
HARRY: Yeah! What the hell was up with that in the first book? If you were going to destroy the bloody thing anyway, why did you wait until AFTER I had already risked my butt?
DUMBLEDORE: I dunno, just for s---- and giggles I suppose.
~ DUMBLEDORE then proceeds to DIE in an extremely CONTRIVED way, leaving HARRY to face the EVIL alone. ~

My Heart has Found the One my Soul Loves
I pulled this off someone's (Leah's) wedding journal. It made me laugh. (and fully empathize!):
"By the way, since it's late at night and I feel like ruminating, discussions in pocket's journal and my other internet community have convinced me that I'm completely not ready to have children (I know this) nor can I, in my constant paranoia, imagine myself being particularly ready (uh, this is not good. I want babies. In about five years, but I want them. And I want to be a great mom.).
I’m an adult. I’ve gotten an education, traveled, been in love a few times and had my heart completely broken, and found the right person for me. I have good friends and I'm close to my family. I’m also living through the grace of student loans and I often let my apartment get cluttered and drink too much wine. And the thought of me...with babies...that don't go back to their mothers at the end of the night...yeah, I think I'm going to go to sleep now."

Plans
So this is more tentative than anything you can possibly imagine, but here is what Matthew and I have come up with so far regarding the wedding:
We'd like:
1) To be married in Montreat, NC
2) to have my brother and his aunt perform the ceremony
3) to have no dj within 25 miles of the reception
4) to invite ~100 people
5) to have 2 attendents each, of no particular gender
6) to have the only alcohol at the wedding be champagne for toasting (guests would also have the option of some sort of sparkling fruit drink)
7) to spend <$8000 (actually, we'd *like* to spend more than that. but only if we had it. and even then maybe not. $8000 is a lot of money, even if the average american wedding purportedly costs $19000.)
8) to be married in the fall of 2004
9) to offend as few people as possible, while having the wedding we want
10) to have fun :)
That's what we've settled on so far. We've also found a photographer we like in the Asheville area, but she is of an undetermined expensiveness, so we're trying not to think about it too much yet.
And remember: None of this has been even remotely finalized. We promise, as soon as we know anything definite, everyone will know. :)

All Things Considered
Niftyness abounds in the lab today. An interviewer is here to interview Kim (the PI) about Norwalk virus, which is, conveniently, what we work on, and which has recently been getting a lot of press because of highly publicized outbreaks on cruise ships and in Boston. Fortunately for the health and wealth of the lab, it is also on the bioterrorism list. So now a lady is running around, following Kim with a microphone. It's really nifty. Unfortunately, my name will probably get cut because Kim stumbled over it. The lady was keen to interview (briefly) us all, to explain what we were currently doing, but Kim jumped in and explained for us. Which is just as well, because I would've made an idiot of myself. It would've been cool to be on the radio though.
Now she's in the lab taping "background noise." Too bad the whole antisocial, potential noise-making lot of us is hiding out here, behind our computers. :)

So we just spent an exorbitant amount of money fixing my car this morning. Enough that Matthew has to worry about fixing his, because this week rent is due, too, and soon my fees for spring semester, and christmas credit card bills we had enough money for at the time, and we really would like to save up enough to be married *this* century, as opposed to the next.
*sigh* Life is very frustrating today. My mood was not helped by the fact that I spent five hours today at the mechanic's, waiting for my car, during which time I developed a massive headache from the combination of lack of breakfast and lunch, screaming kids (school was out because of the snow), and my boss calling my cell phone to yell at me.
There. I feel better now that I vented. And it's pretty outside, because it's still snowing. And I'm about to go bake some sugar cookies. Life's not all bad. :-)

This page and this one make me really happy. In that "my head hurts from talking to my mother and my mother-in-law-to-be in the same night" kind of way.

Snow!

In other news, both my and Matthew's cars appear to have broken down simultaneously, which in my opinion wasn't very nice of them. At least on the positive side, this means I may get to miss work on Monday. :)

1) Midnight Train to Georgia
in which we get entirely too sleepy, and the car lands in a ditch
We left about midnight Friday night/Saturday morning, after staying up all that time to pack. The week before had been crazy-hectic, what with shopping, grading, and starting a new rotation, so we ended up packing all Friday night, when we had intended to be leaving. We took turns driving (the only part of the trip where we really did so) and in general thanked our stars that we were only driving to NC. It was nice once we got on 85, though, knowing that ribbon of highway led to home. :) The stars were amazingly bright as well, especially through rural VA at three in the morning. It probably wasn't smart of me to keep craning over the steering wheel to look at them while driving, but they were beautiful and it kept me awake.
We got to Matthew's sister's house at about four in the morning, after close encounters with scary people at a gas station along the way. (Actually, that whole gas station was odd. Who knew they made condoms like that? What next, ones that talk?) You could see the after-effects of the bad ice storm of a couple weeks back all around, still. It was creepy, and sort of unnerving - who knew what deer might be lurking behind a fallen tree, just at the edge of the road? We made it safely, though - until Matthew started to pull in the driveway.
I remembered that there was a steep drop to the edge of their driveway. Apparently Matthew did not. My car looked pretty pitiful, stuck in the ditch with a wheel in the air. :( Poor car. But we were too tired to do anything about it - we just went inside and passed out on the futon.

Expansion of an earlier-posted quote:
"I thought there was something suspect about my friends, who were reading these children's books. Then I auditioned for this part and bought the books. When I looked up again, it was three days later and there I sat, unwashed and unfed, having read them all. I think of them now as the crack of children's literature." --Jason Isaacs, on the Harry Potter series

Take the What Should Your New Year's Resolution Be? Quiz
It was either that or start a revolution using my artwork. :) I would like to point out, in case it was not obvious already, that I am *already* tired of cleaning house.

I would like to point out that it was very annoying not to have access to the internet, particularly this blog, all holiday. I composed many witty entries, which are now lost to posterity. Alas. I'm sure you all are crushingly disappointed.
